Women Shaping Conservation (WSC) is a platform for women whose passions centre around outdoor pursuits and endeavour to participate in conservation efforts.

Our Mission

To inspire and nurture women providing an inclusive community where all can come together to enjoy the outdoors, including hunting, and conserve wild sheep, wildlife and the landscapes they inhabit.

Our Vision

To bring women together through conservation, to support, inspire and create a global community that enjoys outdoor pursuits, gives back and supports the wildlife and wild places they roam.

Our women’s platform offers many areas of interest such as learning about conservation at our fundraising events, becoming a volunteer, assisting ‘new’ women hunters or for women who just love the outdoors and want to give back.

Women Shaping Conservation isn’t just about women though. Our goal is to create awareness and in doing so we invite everyone to join in. This means that men and youth are welcome to participate. We have an amazing volunteer committee: Carmen Waters, Colin Peters, Cory Mitton, James Mitton, Kristen Eppele, Kyle Stelter, Rebecca Peters, and Tiffany Bader.

The Women Shaping Conservation team is here to help in any way possible particularly when it comes to conservation. For example, our team volunteered at the Jurassic Classic this summer by hosting a wine and cheese party on registration day.

We also hosted a great evening of laughter, empowerment, and conservation at Krause Berry Farms on June 17th, 2022. We had a great turnout with special guests Dr. Helen Schwantje and Renée Thornton. The event was packed with excitement, music, food, silent auction items, prizes, and a private screening of the new WSSBC film ‘Transmission’. The committee had so much fun organizing the event which took place in the lower mainland and we are proud to say it was a successful evening. WSC is an organization to connect easily and develop strong relationships while working together to raise awareness and funds for wild sheep and their habitat.

Rebecca Peters- Chair

Rebecca was born in Manitoba but raised in British Columbia (BC) which offered her a
diverse range of experiences and opportunities to explore different environments and
landscapes. Spending summers at their cabin on Hornby Island also gave her the
chance to connect with nature and develop a love for wildlife. Fishing with her dad and
swimming in the ocean allowed Rebecca to learn about and appreciate the natural
world around her, even though her parents weren’t hunters, they still valued spending
time outdoors and instilled that same love of nature in Rebecca. This offered a well-
rounded childhood that allowed her to develop a strong connection to the environment
and wildlife.
Rebecca’s journey of observing and hunting with her husband led her to discover a
passion for hunting, conservation and giving back. In 2021, Rebecca applied to and was
selected for the Wild Sheep Foundation’s, Women Hunt® Program. The New Hunter
course helped her develop her skills and knowledge further and its clear she is
dedicated to hunting/conservation and wants to make a difference. These steps along
her journey helped create the Wild Sheep Society of BC, Women Shaping Conservation
platform. The platform is an excellent way to bring like-minded women together who
share a passion for the outdoors, hunting and conservation efforts. As Chair of the
committee, Rebecca will have an opportunity to lead and inspire other women who want
to get involved but may not know where to start. Rebecca is excited to learn and grow
while pursuing her love of hunting and the outdoors.

Carmen Waters- Committee Member

She is excited to expand her knowledge and experience by participating in the Women Shaping Conservation Committee while giving back in every way possible. She hopes to inspire others who are curious to explore the outdoors.

Cory Mitton - Committee Member

Born and raised in Port Moody, BC, Cory developed a love for the outdoors early on,
exploring the forests, rivers, and lakes in her backyard. She has fond memories of
camping and the joy of sitting around a campfire with family and friends.
After marrying an avid hunter, Cory began joining him on his adventures and quickly
developed a deep respect for hunters and their dedication to conservation. Being
involved in the process, from harvest to table, only strengthened her passion for the
outdoors.
Inspired by the hunting community's spirit of support and commitment to conservation,
Cory is dedicated to giving back and ensuring that these efforts continue for her

James Mitton - Committee Member

Hello my name is James Mitton and I am from Port Moody.  I grew up in northern
Manitoba, I have always loved the outdoors and spent my early years camping and
fishing, I came to BC in 2002 to climb mountains and explore all that BC has to offer. I
met my wife in 2020 and we were married a year later, she introduced me to the Wild
Sheep Society of BC, I became a life member and joined her as a volunteer for the
Jurassic Classic. I immediately saw the incredible work that WSSBC was doing and the
generosity and commitment of its members. In the past few years I have had the
pleasure of working with the dedicated members at various events and I am excited to
continue working with WSSBC in whatever capacity I am able.

Kristen has always had a passion for the outdoors. She grew up in Ontario and moved
to BC with her husband who introduced her to hunting and foraging lifestyle.
She’s a passionate dental hygienist, holistic nutritionist and mother! Kristen and her
husband are excited to teach their son about this lifestyle and he’s already become
such an avid outdoorsman at such a young age!
Kristen herself knows the barriers and apprehension that women have in the outdoors
world, as she’s experienced the feelings herself. She is excited to be part of this
initiative to help women and the younger generation feel confident in learning about the
outdoors, and have better access to learning about hunting through other avenues.

conservation work, developed an interest in sustainably harvesting her meat and just
this fall took her first big game animal.  Kyle believes that the future of hunting and
ultimately conservation lies in attracting new hunters which include women and youth.
He is proud to serve on the Women Shaping Conservation committee and looks forward
to seeing this program grow as we attract future female hunters and conservationists to
hunting, the Society and the conservation community.
